Dave taught us to respect and appreciate the arts. Literature, books, politics-there wasn't a moment wasted when you talked to Dave. Every moment in his presence was one of mind-expanding conversation and enlightenment. Everyone left his house with a feeling that there is more to life than our negative, everyday drudgery. He made me feel that there are great things out there to be listened to, watched, or read, and no one can get between you and your own mind. And most of all he taught me never to stop appreciating the simple, yet extraordinary world of the arts. Regardless of our problems, the greatest things in life cost little but have the greatest value. Dave was the greatest kind of intellectual. The kind that uses his intellect to enjoy life and enrich others. Wish the world had more, and sad to say, now has one less. He will be greatly missed. “What is an intellectual? In general, someone seriously devoted to what used to be called the “life of the mind”: thinking pursued not instrumentally, for the sake of practical goals, but simply for the sake of knowing and understanding.” ― Gary Gutting

I have many wonderful memories of hanging out at your home in Rensselaer and having your family at our home too. I loved the conversation, tea, sports and especially the music. I learned to play Saxophone because of Dave. I am thankful for the blessings I received because of our friendship. Dave will be missed by all of us. I am so sorry for your loss.

I knew Dave through my brother Ben Thorp. Dave was the smartest person I have ever known. I was always amazed by how much he knew about so many things. Beyond that Dave was also very funny and very kind. He spoke at my sister (Bonnie) funeral which my Niece remembers with great fondness. He visited my mom in Buskirk with my brother Ben on more than one occasion. I remember sitting out on the back porch with him dodging the mosquitos so that we could sneak a cigarette. Hard to believe I have known him since he was a teenager - he was always a presence in our family. And I have to admit that both my sister and I had secret crushes on him when we were little. How could we not - he had such charisma and was our big brother's best friend! My sympathies to his children and grand children. They have lost a great man. I'm sure Dave will be missed by everyone who ever knew him.
