Obituary of Arya Tonkin
Rensselaer- Arya “Ish” Tonkin age 89, of Rensselaer, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2022 at Van Rensselaer Manor Nursing Home. He was born on January 31, 1933 in Albany and was the son of Philip and Sarah Tonkin. Ish went to Van Rensselaer High School and graduated in 1951. He was a food broker, as well as a basketball referee for forty years. He was a member of the James Hill Hook and Ladder Fire Company and a life member of the B.P.O.E Elks #2073. Ish enjoyed golfing and camping. He spent many winters in Florida alongside his wife. He was an avid NY Yankees fan and was known for his red sneakers. Most of all, he loved his family and cherished the time spent together. Husband of Carol A. (Davis) Tonkin. Father of Mark (MaryAnne) Tonkin, Michelle Tonkin and Terri (Mike) Smith. Grandfather of Nathaniel, David (Olivia), Andrea (Mike), Matthew (Charissa), Jonathan, Sarah and Samantha. Great grandfather of Noah, Violet and Everett. Brother of the late Marvin and Earl Tonkin. Funeral from the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue Rensselaer Thursday, July 28th at 4PM. All are welcome to attend. Relatives and friends are invited and may call prior to the service from 2-4PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Northeastern Chapter 1003 New Loudon Road, Suite 201 Cohoes, NY 12047.
