It really makes me happy when readers go out of their way to tell us that Scary makes them FEEL a certain way ... like they are part of an extended Monster Kid family where others feel the same as they do. Getting calls and letters from readers helps Don and I realize that all the time, effort and heart we pour into publishing Scary Monsters means so much more than just a monster magazine to many.
I can surely say that SM is definitely more than a magazine or a "business" to me, it's about relationships and shared experiences in so many ways, bringing total strangers together in a "pulp-page" reunion and reliving the connection we all share with the classics and movies of our youth.
Don is not a phone person, and is really quite an introvert ... well, I help balance him out in that regard. I do most (if not all) of the phone answering and so many times end up getting lost in time, literally spending hours with many readers talking about such a variety of monster (and not so) Monster Kid topics! It is kinda weird (and a humbling experience) when someone calls and says, "Hi Vicki," like they've known me forever, and they just start gabbing away. I'll get off the phone and Don will ask, "Who was that?" I'm like, I have no idea, and we both try and figure out if we've spoken before, only to discover it was their first time calling! To have an 80+-something-year-old tell us, "I'm a long-time Monster Kid, film historian and movie buff, and this is the first time, ever, to not only write a letter to a magazine but to also call and enjoy speaking to someone I consider a long-lost friend." Most times our own blood family members simply can't relate nor do they understand our obsession for the genre.
I just found out recently we lost a long-time "customer," our friend David Palladino. To have a wife, sister or other family relative reach out and call to let us know that their loved one had passed away and that they would've wanted US to know as "our friendship" meant a lot to them, is something I can't express but brings me to tears. I hadn't heard from David for quite a few months and got concerned as we would regularly talk and he would send in the mail to me these cute monster cartoon clippings he had collected over the years (one of which is included in the letters section of Issue #131). David was not only a Monster Kid but also a huge James Bond fan. He would have me regularly shop for him over the internet, looking for what I would tell him are "boys Barbie dolls" related to the 007 franchise. We are obviously not a James Bond exclusive kind of company, but David felt connected enough to ask me to help him find such-and-such a figure, etc. Sometimes it would take me months to track down what he was looking for. I'm feeling sad and quite melancholy as I won't get to speak with him again or meet him on this side of heaven. He would've truly loved and have been so proud of Scary Monsters issue #131, so I dedicate this issue to him. -- Vicki Smeraldi, Scary Monsters & Castle of Frankenstein magazines and MyMovieMonsters.com

I knew David for more than 20 years through the Troy Elks 141. Spent many happy hours working with him and his wife Jeanne in the Monday night Bingo Kitchen. I worked with David when he was Treasurer of the Elks and later he helped me out when I was the Secretary. He was always a great person to be around, whether it was working on a project or together as officers, or just having fun at an activity. David you will be very much missed. I just know you are now with Jeanne in heaven. Bless you both.

Dave was a true gentleman! My late husband, Walter, was a member of the Troy Lodge of Elks for forty-five years and worked on many projects with Dave. More recently, Dave joined our dinner group and we shared many good times and stories together.
May he rest in peace with beloved wife, Jeanne.

I grew up with David in Mechanicville and Troy when he jumped back and forth. He was a great friend; had a lot of fun with David. I was recently trying to look him up, but had no luck. He knew a friend of mine that just passed last year; his name was Bill Conely and he was supposed to get in touch with David so we could talk. So sorry to see that he passed; I have great memories of him.

Tribute Wall for David Palladino - April 23, 2023
My husband, Robert Buckingham (recently deceased) and I joined the Elks in 2005, after moving from NYC to retire. We enjoyed being with Dave and his wife Jeanne for dinners and many Elk’s parties and events. My husband, Bob, with support of Dave, Walter, and others, became the Treasurer of our Local 141 Elks.
Bob and I interacted with all the officers, and with Jeanne, Dave’s wife, who headed the Women’s Auxiliary for many years.
It was a fun time being able to see friends for “weekly dinners at our local Elks Club.” Dave received many awards for his service as an Officer at our local Elks. My husband, as Treasurer, as awarded “Officer of the Year as Treasurer” (2010-2011).
In recent years, Jeanne, Dave’s wife, and my husband Bob became ill with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. For the past several years, Dave and I would share our concerns about caring for our spouses, since eventually each had to go into nursing homes for more care.
We would join other fellow Elks for supper. It was nice having the support of friends. Dave was a wonderful husband, Elk and friend. He will be missed.
Sincerely,
Adrienne P. Buckingham
