Obituary of John A. "Jack" Nelson

Rensselaer- John A. “Jack” Nelson, age 88, passed away at St. Peter’s Hospice, on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.  He was the son of the late Archibald and Martha (Maciariello) Nelson.

Jack was a graduate of Mechanicville High School and went on to attend HVCC. He later joined the Marine Corps, but also served in the US Navy reserves and the Army New York Guard infantry as a  Second Lieutenant. Following his honorable discharge he worked for the State of NY, Office of General Services Design and Construction group as an engineer, until his retirement in 1990. He was also the former Schodack town Supervisor for two years.

Jack held lifetime memberships with the American Legion Post 91 and the Marine Corps Association. He also was a 4^th degree in the Knights of Columbus. Jack was an avid golfer and bowler. He enjoyed a good Giants game and was a NY Yankee fan. Above all Jack loved and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Jack leaves behind his beloved wife Suzanne (Snyder), and children, Jack (Alonna) Nelson, Tom (Donna) Nelson, Bob Nelson, Carl (Amy) Nelson, and daughter in law Susan. He also leaves his adored grandchildren, Melissa (Mark) Skahill, Abby Luciano, Cooper (Heather) Nelson, Connor Nelson, Amy (Anthony) Cremo, Dan (Geena) Nelson, Steven (Liz) Nelson, Sean Nelson, Andrew Nelson, Anthony Nelson, John Nelson and 12 great grandchildren.

Along with his parents, Jack is predeceased by his son Gary Nelson and his sister Patricia St. John.

The family would like to extend their gratitude and special thanks to the staff at St. Peter’s Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday, August 7, 2023 from 4-7pm at the W.J. Lyons, Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue, Rensselaer. Funeral service at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at 10:30am. Burial will follow in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
