Obituary of William E. Winnie

Schodack- William Edward Winnie, age 91, passed on to eternal life on April 29, 2024. He was born in Albany and was the son of the late Clinton and Catherine (McCarthy) Winnie, descendants of a Dutch settler, Pieter Winne who came to this area circa 1630’s.  William leaves behind his partner of 62 years Dale L. Morgan from the home they shared in Schodack, NY, who he traveled with throughout the US, England, Ireland, Far East, Russia, Cuba and many more.

William grew up in the North end of the city and became a manager at the Coughtry Company. He later worked as a salesman for AM International, Bruning Division.  William was active in the Albany Junior Chamber of Commerce, which oversees the Tulip Festival and Soap Box Derby. He enjoyed annual Christmas parties and gave many gifts at local nursing homes. Bill served in the US Navy and volunteered his time two days a week at Albany Veterans Hospital for over 21 years.  Bill will always be remembered for kindness, compassion and generosity, he was a great man and will be missed by all who knew him.

Family meant the world to William. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his beloved sister Catherine (Winnie) Bond First, who he shared a very special bond with, as well as his “kids”, nieces and nephews, Kathleen Primero, Sharon Roberts, Darlene (John) George, and James Bond. He will also be missed by many great nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, William is predeceased by his siblings, Clinton J., Shirley M. and Mary L. Winnie, as well as his niece, Shirley Bond and his nephew Joseph (survives Mabel) Bond.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call to the W.J. Lyons, Jr., Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue, Rensselaer, Friday, May 3, 2024, from 10-11:30am. A funeral home service will be held at 11:30am. Burial immediately following in Graceland Cemetery, Albany.
